4. Stages of the Irish secondary education system
A. Years 1-3 Programs, 11-14 years old
Junior Certificate Examination (Junior Certificate Examination)
(The Junior Certificate program is equivalent to junior high school in the United States, or slightly below GCSE level in the United Kingdom.)
What do students gain?
The curriculum includes languages, including French, Spanish and German; sciences, including physics, chemistry and biology; business studies, home economics, art, music, technology, carpentry and ICT. Junior Certificate students are required to study Irish, English, Mathematics, History and Geography, as well as a European language.
international children entering the country at the age of 11 and above are not required to study Irish.
B. Year 4 (equivalent to U.S. Grade 10), Age: 15-16 years old
Transitional Program (TYP) Duration: 2 years
Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination (LSCE)
What do students gain? (Understanding of their own interests and making their own choices for the Leaving Certificate program!)
Personal research skills, study skills and a more rigorous analytical approach to learning. The final exam provides a pathway for students to progress to level three.
Opportunities are provided to explore other subject areas, participate in off-campus programs and cultural experiences.
How this is achieved, Transition Year curriculum content:
75% traditional academic subjects in preparation for the Leaving Certificate program;
25% provides students with enrichment learning opportunities to help them enhance their life skills.
Student rights: 1-4 weeks of work experience available
C. Years 5-6 (Senior Secondary Certificate Program) average age 16, 17 and 18 years old. Duration: 2 years
(The Higher School Certificate standard is equivalent to the A-level exams in the UK, the International Baccalaureate Organization, or the Pre-University Curriculum in the US.)
The fifth year lays the foundation for the sixth year (i.e. the Higher School Certificate Program, Irish National Examinations).
The Baccalaureate directly articulates to the Junior Certificate, with a few subjects being omitted as students begin to specialize in other subjects.
